Active Release on Salt Spring Island
Manual Therapy for Muscles, Fascia, and Nerves That Will Not Let Go
What Is Active Release?
Active Release is a hands-on, movement-based technique that targets tight muscles, restricted fascia, and irritated nerves. It is designed to reduce adhesions, restore normal tissue mobility, and relieve stubborn pain and tension, especially in areas affected by past injury, repetitive use, or postural stress.
At Gulf Islands Chiropractic, Active Release is part of our functional, patient-centered approach to care. We use it to help patients with chronic tension, nerve entrapments, tendon issues, and movement restrictions return to more comfortable, efficient movement.

How Does It Work?
Active Release combines precise manual pressure with specific movement. Your chiropractor applies controlled pressure to a restricted area while you actively move a joint or limb. This combination helps:
• Reduce scar tissue and adhesions
• Restore mobility between muscle and fascia layers
• Decrease tension around compressed or entrapped nerves
• Improve circulation and nutrient delivery to affected tissues
This process releases built-up tension and improves the glide between soft tissue layers, which often leads to better flexibility and pain relief.

What Can Active Release Help?
Chronic and Repetitive Strain Injuries
• Neck and upper back tightness from desk or screen posture
• Shoulder impingement or rotator cuff restrictions
• Hip flexor or gluteal tightness from prolonged sitting or cycling
Tendinopathies and Overuse Syndromes
• Tennis elbow or golfer’s elbow
• Achilles tendinopathy
• Rotator cuff dysfunction
• Plantar fasciitis
• Gluteal tendinopathy and hip bursitis
Nerve Entrapments and Movement Limitations
• Thoracic outlet syndrome
• Carpal tunnel-like symptoms
• Sciatic-type leg pain caused by muscular compression
By addressing restricted tissues directly, Active Release can be effective when general stretching, massage, or rest have not brought full relief.

What Does It Feel Like?
Patients often describe Active Release as a productive discomfort — firm pressure that brings relief as tension eases. The technique is always applied with control, and the depth is adjusted to your comfort. Some post-treatment soreness is normal, but most patients notice a distinct improvement in mobility and ease of movement within a few sessions.

Integrated With Neuro-Release Therapy
At Gulf Islands Chiropractic, Active Release is often used alongside other therapies in our Neuro-Release Therapy system. These may include:
• Spinal adjustments to restore joint mobility and reduce nervous system tension
• Shockwave therapy to promote healing in fibrotic or stubborn tissues
• Laser therapy to reduce inflammation and support cellular repair
• Vibration therapy and cupping to enhance circulation and tissue flexibility
This comprehensive approach ensures that we address not just the symptom, but the broader system of muscles, joints, and nerves involved.

Is It Right for Me?
Active Release may be appropriate if:
• You have ongoing tension, pain, or limited range of motion
• You have tried massage, rest, or stretching with limited results
• You suspect nerve involvement or deep muscular tension
• You want a hands-on, targeted solution that addresses the root of the problem
Each session is customized to your needs, and we always assess for safety and appropriateness before beginning care.

Soft Tissue Mobilization and Trigger Point Therapy
Active Release sessions may also include:
• Trigger point therapy to relieve local muscle knots and referred pain
• Soft tissue mobilization to address larger areas of tension and muscle imbalance
These techniques work together to target both surface-level and deeper restrictions, especially in persistent cases like:
• Rotator cuff tightness
• Hip and gluteal pain
• Neck and shoulder stiffness
• Repetitive strain injuries
