TENS + EMS on Salt Spring Island
Electrotherapy for Pain Relief and Muscle Re-Activation
What Is TENS and EMS Therapy?
TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) and EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) are non-invasive electrotherapy techniques used to reduce pain, stimulate muscle activation, and improve neuromuscular coordination.

At Gulf Islands Chiropractic, we use the NeuroTrac system to deliver safe and targeted electrical impulses. These therapies help calm irritated nerves and re-engage underactive muscles, especially in cases of injury, chronic tension, or movement dysfunction.
How Does It Work?
TENS Therapy delivers low-frequency electrical stimulation to:
• Block or disrupt pain signals traveling to the brain
• Promote the release of endorphins, the body’s natural pain-relieving chemicals

EMS Therapy stimulates muscle contraction to:
• Improve muscle activation and recruitment
• Prevent disuse atrophy during recovery periods
• Retrain muscles affected by pain, injury, or poor posture
• Restore balance between underactive and overactive muscle groups

Both therapies are comfortable, customizable, and effective, often producing immediate relief or improved muscle control during sessions.

What Can TENS and EMS Help?
Pain Management
• Neck and lower back discomfort
• Chronic muscular tension
• Headaches related to nerve irritation or poor posture
• Rib joint or intercostal pain
Muscle Re-Education and Movement Support
• Weak core or glute activation
• Shoulder blade control deficits (often linked to rotator cuff dysfunction)
• Hip instability due to gluteal tendinopathy or bursitis
• Re-activation of key muscle groups following injury or surgery
These modalities are particularly effective when combined with hands-on techniques like Active Release or corrective exercise therapy, enhancing both pain relief and motor retraining.

What Does It Feel Like?
TENS therapy feels like a light tingling or buzzing on the skin, while EMS produces rhythmic pulses that result in gentle muscle contractions. Intensity is always adjusted to your comfort level. Sessions last between 10 and 20 minutes, with no downtime required afterward.

Integrated With Neuro-Release Therapy
At Gulf Islands Chiropractic, TENS and EMS are part of our broader Neuro-Release Therapy system, and often used in conjunction with:
• Spinal adjustments to restore joint and nerve alignment
• Active Release to release soft tissue restrictions
• Vibration therapy to reduce pain sensitivity and improve circulation
• Laser therapy to support healing at the cellular level
• Shockwave therapy to treat stubborn tendinitis and/or tendinosis
Together, this integrative approach not only relieves symptoms but also supports more complete neuromuscular recovery and functional improvement.
Is It Right for Me?
TENS and EMS may be appropriate if:
• You are managing nerve-related pain or persistent muscle tightness
• You are recovering from an injury and need to re-engage specific muscle groups
• You are seeking a non-invasive, drug-free approach to improve function
These therapies are safe for most individuals, including athletes, seniors, and those with chronic musculoskeletal conditions.
