FAQ
At Gulf Islands Chiropractic, we strive to provide our patients with all the information they need to make informed decisions about their health. Here are some commonly asked questions we receive. If you have any additional questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.
The duration of a chiropractic treatment session can vary depending on the specific needs of the patient and the techniques used. Typically, sessions range from 15 minutes to an hour. The initial consultation may take longer as it involves a thorough examination and discussion of the patient's medical history.
Although our clinic is located on Salt Spring Island, we make regular visits to the surrounding islands, including Mayne Island and Galiano Island. On Mayne, we work out of Mayne Island Health Centre, while on Galiano, you can find us at Galiano Island Health Centre. To book an appointment at one of these clinics, simply select the correct location on our online booking portal or mention to our staff when booking. Alternatively, you can take the ferry to see us on Salt Spring any time. We offer virtual TeleHealth visits for initial and follow up treatments, if necessary.
During your first visit, we will conduct a thorough evaluation to determine your specific needs. This may involve taking a medical history, performing a physical exam, and taking digital postural measurements, if necessary. We will then develop a personalized treatment plan to help you achieve your health goals.
Our clinic does only direct bills for ICBC claims. We offer indirect billing for MSP patients. Otherwise, we do not offer direct billing for other extended health insurance plans at this time. Most other insurance plans cover chiropractic treatment, but the extent of coverage may vary. It is recommended to contact your insurance provider to determine your coverage for chiropractic care and any specific requirements, such as referrals or preauthorization.
Chiropractic treatment is commonly used to treat conditions such as back pain, neck pain, headaches, sciatica, joint pain, plantar fascitis, rotator cuff injuries, gluteal and patellar tendinopathies and other musculoskeletal injuries. It can also be beneficial for individuals with chronic conditions like arthritis, fibromyalgia, and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Chiropractic treatment is a form of alternative medicine that focuses on diagnosing and treating neurological and mechanical disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system, particularly the spine. Chiropractors use manual treatments that span the spectrum of gentle and light tissue treatments to hands-on adjustment techniques that improve joint function and alleviate pain.
At Gulf Islands Chiro, we offer both shockwave therapy (radial ESWT) and laser therapy to treat various tendinopathies. Shockwave therapy is particularly effective for conditions such as rotator cuff injuries, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, patellar femoral syndromes, and gluteal tendinopathies. This therapy works by delivering focused acoustic waves to the affected area, promoting tissue repair and regeneration. To enhance the effectiveness of shockwave therapy, we often pair it with laser therapy, which helps to reduce pain and inflammation. By combining these treatments, we aim to provide comprehensive pain relief and faster recovery for our patients.
The number of chiropractic sessions required will vary depending on the individual's condition, severity, and response to treatment. Some patients may experience relief after just a few sessions, while others may require ongoing maintenance care. Your chiropractor will evaluate your progress and provide a personalized treatment plan.
Gulf Islands Chiropractic strives to be a welcoming, safe healing environment for patients. With the hands-on nature of chiropractic care, we recognize the need to provide trauma-informed care and practice informed consent every step of the way. Contrary to common belief, chiropractic care can be incredibly gentle and non-invasive. We walk patients through the treatment verbally, welcome questions, and encourage them to choose whether or not a treatment is right for them, supporting patients with a variety of approaches to suit their individual needs.
Chiropractic treatment is generally considered safe when performed by a qualified and licensed chiropractor. However, there can be some risks or side effects associated with certain techniques or pre-existing health conditions. It is important to discuss any concerns or specific medical conditions with your chiropractor before undergoing treatment.
In some cases, chiropractic treatment may help prevent the need for surgery by providing pain relief and improving the underlying mechanical issues. However, this will depend on the specific condition and severity. Chiropractors often work in conjunction with other healthcare professionals to determine the best course of treatment for each individual.
Chiropractic treatment primarily focuses on manual manipulation and adjustment techniques to alleviate pain and improve joint function. It typically does not involve the use of medication. However, some chiropractors may recommend or incorporate other forms of treatment, such as therapeutic exercises, hot/cold therapy, or lifestyle changes.
