Patellofemoral Syndrome

Patellofemoral Syndrome (Jumper’s Knee) Treatment on Salt Spring Island

Understanding the Condition
Patellofemoral Syndrome, also known as Jumper’s Knee, is a common condition involving pain at the front of the knee, often linked to irritation or overload of the patellar tendon. It is prevalent among runners, jumpers, and people who do repetitive squatting, stair climbing, or kneeling.

Mechanism of Injury (MOI)
Jumper’s Knee typically develops from repetitive stress or overuse of the quadriceps and patellar tendon. High-impact activities like basketball, volleyball, or hiking with steep elevation can strain the tendon. It may also arise from muscle imbalances, poor movement mechanics, or sudden changes in activity level.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain and tenderness just below the kneecap (patella)

  • Discomfort during or after jumping, squatting, or stair climbing

  • Swelling or warmth around the tendon

  • Stiffness in the morning or after sitting

  • Pain that worsens with increased activity

Clinical Insight
Clinically, patellar tendinopathy often presents with:

  • Localized pain at the inferior pole of the patella

  • Pain with resisted knee extension

  • Tenderness on palpation of the patellar tendon

  • Positive single-leg squat or decline step test
